GETTING A TATTOO
-
Do I need to leave a deposit?
Yes, a deposit is required to secure your booking.
It comes off the final price of your tattoo. Deposits are non-refundable but can be moved if you give more than 48hrs notice prior to your appointment.
-
How to make an appointment?
The easiest way is through my online booking form. Just send over your idea, any references, size and placement, and I’ll get back to you.
If you’re not 100% sure yet, you can book a free consultation and we’ll figure it out together. Consultations are available online or in person.
-
How much does a tattoo cost?
That all depends on style, size and placement. There are so many variables to a tattoo design that it’s impossible for me to give a price without fully understanding what it is you’re after.
I do however have a minimum charge of £120. Day sessions are charged at £500
-
Do you offer consultations?
Yes, and they’re completely free.
We can chat through your idea, placement, size, and what will actually work long-term. No pressure to book after.
-
Can I bring a friend?
This really varies on the scale of the project and how many other artists are in on the day of your appointment. If you let me know in advance that you’d like to bring a friend or partner with you I’ll always try to be as accommodating as possible.
-
Can you design something custom for me?
Of course — that’s the whole point.
I’ll work with your references and ideas to create something unique that fits your body properly. I won’t just copy something straight off the internet.
-
How long does a tattoo take to heal?
Roughly:
- Surface healing: 2–3 weeks
- Fully settled: 4–6 weeksI’ll give you clear aftercare instructions on the day to make sure it heals properly.
-
Where are you based?
I work out of Black Dahlia in Hackney, East London. I also do guest spots around the UK. As of July 5th I’ll be moving Bali to live and work. I will be coming back to the UK every 3 months or so to take on UK based projects.
If I’m travelling, I’ll usually announce it on Instagram.
-
What aftercare do you recommend?
I’ll walk you through it in person, but generally
- Keep it clean
- Keep it dry. (I advise most of my clients to dry heal their tattoos)
- You can lightly moisturise after a week
- Don’t pick it
- Avoid swimming and heavy sun exposure while it heals -
Does getting a tattoo hurt?
Short answer: yeah, a bit.
But it’s totally manageable, and I’ll make sure you’re as comfortable as possible the whole time. Most people say it’s nowhere near as bad as they expected.
Do not turn up with wherever you’re getting tattoo numbed and wrapped in cling film. I will not tattoo you and you’ll lose your deposit. I do not work with numbing cream. Not only is numbing generally unregulated making it risky and potentially unsafe, skin that has been numbed is a lot harder for me to work with. On top of that numbing cream can effect how a tattoo heals, most of the time it will heal poorly.
-
How should I prepare for my appointment?
Keep it simple:
- Get a good night’s sleep
- Eat before you come in
- Stay hydrated
- Wear something comfortable (and easy to access the area)
- For longer sessions I recommend having netflix on your iphone or ipad etc. Just something to distract and/or entertain yourself throughout the session. As much as I’m a social person and love to chat I often do need to just ‘lock in’ and concentrate so I can do the absolute best tattoo possible for you.
- Don’t arrive hungover, I won’t tattoo you. -
What styles do you specialise in?
I mainly work in: Black and grey, Realism and Fineline
I do take on other projects in different styles like colour and traditional. I’m open to all styles of work providing I feel I can do a good job for you. If I feel the style you’re after isn’t for me I have a lot of friends in the industry working in almost every style and will always be happy to recommend another artist if they’re a better for you.
If you’re not sure what style your idea fits into, I’ll help guide you.
-
What if I need to reschedule?
No problem, just give me as much notice as possible.
Deposits can usually be moved if you give enough time, any less than 48hrs prior to your appointment and you will unfortunately lose your deposit.
-
Do you do touch-ups?
I offer free touch up with all my tattoos. However, If I feel that touch needs a touch up due to your neglect or poor aftercare then any touch ups will be chargable.
-
How do I contact you?
Best way is through:
- The booking form on this site
- Instagram DMs @carterhewlettI’ll get back to you as soon as I can.
-
I’m nervous — is that normal?
Completely normal.
A lot of people come in feeling like that, especially for their first one. I keep things relaxed and easy — no pressure, no ego — just a good experience and a solid tattoo at the end of it. Take a look at my reviews, I’m really good at making people feel super comfortable and relaxed, particularly first timers. It’s usually far less painful than people anticipate.
